Most machines I’m called out for didn’t fail because they were badly built. They failed because of the water running through them. The espresso machine gets the blame; the water did the damage. And out here, that’s a story I tell more than almost any other.

What Denver water actually does to a machine
Scale. Every time water is heated, the minerals in it come out of solution and deposit as hard, chalky scale — and an espresso machine heats water constantly, to high temperatures, right where it matters most. Scale builds up inside the boiler, on the heating element, and in the valves and lines that control pressure and flow. It’s a slow strangle: the machine works harder to hit temperature, pressure drifts, flow chokes, and eventually a boiler element or a valve gives out.
And here’s the part most owners don’t find out until it’s too late: scale-caused failure voids most manufacturer warranties. So the water doesn’t just kill the machine — it kills the coverage that would have paid to fix it.
What that looks like on a real machine
A café opened with a brand-new Linea Classic and put a cheap water softener on it. That was the whole water plan.
Inside four years the machine was scaled badly enough to start failing in stages. It began with service calls that looked unrelated to each other — group head valves sticking open and leaking, again and again. Then the boiler started overfilling, because the fill solenoid had scaled up and stuck open. That one flooded the café.
The repair was a $2,000 descale of both boilers and the hydraulic system, and the machine was out of service for a month.
The $2,000 isn’t the number that hurts. The month is. A café that can’t pull shots for a month is losing its actual revenue, and none of it was covered — scale-caused failure voids the warranty. Filtration specced to that shop’s measured water would have cost a fraction of the repair and none of the downtime.
Why “soft to moderately hard” still wrecks equipment
People look up Denver’s water, see it described as soft-to-moderate, and assume they’re fine. They’re not. Denver water varies by source and season — Denver Water itself calls it “soft to moderately hard” — but it is scale-forming enough that untreated water can still damage espresso equipment. Espresso machines are unusually sensitive: the constant high-temperature heating concentrates and deposits minerals far faster than, say, a home faucet ever would. “Moderate” hardness at your kitchen sink is still plenty to scale a boiler over a couple of years. And because it swings by source and season, the only honest way to know your water is to measure it at your address — not to trust a citywide average.
Descaling isn’t the fix — treating the water going in is
This is where most advice goes wrong. Descaling is a chemical rescue after the damage has started, and on a plumbed commercial machine it’s not a real fix at all — you can’t reliably flush scale out of a boiler and valve train that’s already caked. Worse, aggressive descaling can loosen scale into places that then clog or leak.
The fix is upstream: treat the water before it ever enters the machine. Filtration and softening, specced to your measured hardness, so the water going in is right — general targets land around 35–85 ppm depending on the machine. A filter matched to your water protects the boiler, the valves, and the warranty. A generic cartridge dropped in because it fit the fitting doesn’t — it just makes people feel like they handled it. Good water in beats descaling after, every time.
How I spec water — for cafés and for homes
I don’t guess at water. I test the hardness onsite, at your address, and recommend filtration sized to that number and that machine — because a café pulling 300 drinks a day and a home Linea Mini don’t have the same water needs, and neither matches a citywide average. I’ll tell you exactly what your setup needs and give you the options; putting it in is your call. For a café, that decision belongs in the planning stage, before the machine turns on (what a commercial setup really costs). For a home machine, it’s the single cheapest thing you can do to make an expensive machine last.
